Everyone talks about rainy spring days, but summer and fall can have their share of completely washed-out days as well. While some people get excited when they look outside and see a good, steady rain, if your senior likes to get out and be active each day, a rainy day can bring dread about what she’ll do to pass the time all day. That gray sky outside may color her mood and make it a dark day inside as well as out. Here are some ideas for filling time indoors, and how companion care at home can help:
Plan Ahead for Rainy Days
Having a few rainy-day activities set aside for your loved one is a great way that when those rainy days hit, she can pull one of these activities out and look at the day as a bright spot in her week as she gets to work on something she’s been specifically saving for the day when there was nothing but dark clouds and rain outside.
Six Rainy Day Activities
- Puzzles. Puzzles are a great way to enjoy a rainy day and for the most part, they can only be completed inside so having an area set up for putting a puzzle together can be just the thing needed to get those a complete rain out. The important thing is to find a puzzle that excites your loved one and then make sure she saves it until that rainy day hits. Then clear off the table and she can begin to put the pieces together.
- Art Projects. Another run rainy day activity is to create some art. Whether your loved one likes to paint, knit, or make greeting cards, a rainy day is perfect to let those creative juices flow. A companion care at home provider can help your loved one get all of her supplies in one area and set up for hours of creating items to possibly give as gifts or save for herself.
- Movie marathons. Pop up some popcorn and start up a movie marathon to enjoy the wet weather. Your loved one could enlist the help of her companion care at home provider to find all of the movies made by her favorite actor or all of the movies in a series to spend the day snuggled up on the couch and enjoy. Just remember to add some stretch breaks between.
- A good book. Speaking of snuggling up on the couch, there’s not much better than tucking in with a good book, a hot cup of tea, and some relaxing background music to enjoy a few hours on a rainy day.
- House Cleaning. While cleaning the house may not be the first idea when thinking of something fun to do on a rainy day, there might be chores that always get neglected because they’re not urgent but completing them sure would feel good. Maybe it’s organizing the pantry or putting all of the photos into photo albums. These are great rainy-day chores that offer a sweet reward when complete.
- Baking. Baking up some sweet treats on a rainy day can make your loved one’s home smell like heaven and produce some fun treats to share. Her companion care at home provider can help her with this delicious project.
With these fun activities waiting, the next thing you know, your loved one will be eagerly anticipating the next rainy day.
